DENVER, Aug 27 (Reuters) - U.S. Sen. Barack Obama won the Democratic presidential nomination on Wednesday, making history as the first black candidate picked to lead a major American political party.

Obama's name was placed into nomination by acclamation at the Democratic Part's convention in Denver. He faces Republican rival John McCain in the Nov. 4 election to succeed President George W. Bush.
